My thoughts on ‘Man of Steel’, even though I haven’t seen it yet

If you’ve been really invested in film and box-office over the course of the last decade, you are pretty aware of fanboys, girls, crazy people and straight up lunatics. You may have been apart of a forum or you may have just recently joined Twitter, tweeted your love or dislike for a film, and then were subsequently yelled at by @LoganLermanCanBeMyWallFlower99 because of said opinion.

At this point I’m beating a dead horse, but to reiterate: opinions are fine. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion. Maybe you didn’t find Bridesmaids funny. Sure. I don’t think you’re a good person and I won’t talk to you for the rest of time, but you are welcomed to that opinion…as long as you can back it up. Opinions were once a great thing and lead to those with common or opposing interests to engage in a discussion. Discussions seem to have gone extinct thanks to social media. I said a few weeks ago that no one is really watching, reading or listening to stuff anymore. We are. Or they are, rather, but it’s all in hopes to get the first tweet out. I am not innocent in this, because as soon as I’ve finished watching a movie I’m on my phone tweeting my thoughts. When I first got Twitter and was completely inexperienced, I watched True Lies for the first time and live-tweeted the entire thing. I regret it every single damn day.

So, of course, living in the age we live in now, with Twitter, Vine (we are now “vining” opinions by the way, oh…) Instagram, etc… you’re getting everything all at once. I think it was Rachel Dratch who once described Twitter as walking into a room of people screaming at each other. 100%. So, with all this and with all our opinions and with every summer movie season, I am witness to a lot of opinions, spoilers, etc… But again, no one is talking to one another. We’re just screaming.

I’ve yet to see Man of Steel. It might be a couple of days until I actually get around to seeing it. But at this point, I feel like I’ve already seen it. Thanks to Twitter, I’ve learnt the following:

  • The first 45 minutes are really good, but the rest is not so much
  • Henry Cavill is really good
  • Amy Adams is really good
  • Kevin Costner is really good
  • Russell Crowe is really good
  • Michael Shannon isn’t very good
  • You become disengaged with the film in it’s final act, which was too much action
  • Apparently people liked Superman Returns
  • Zach Snyder shouldn’t direct anything
  • Zach Snyder should direct everything
  • Henry Cavill deserves better
  • We feel sorry for Brandon Routh
  • Christopher Nolan should stay away from DC Comic character that aren’t Batman
  • The film is too long
  • The film is, like, really pretty
  • The score is really good
  • See it in 3D and not 2D
  • It’s the worst movie of the summer
  • It’s the best superhero movies in year

Am I missing anything?

I’ve basically seen the movie. So, when I actually do end up seeing this movie, I will have pre-formed thoughts. I’ll agree with everything above. I’ll disagree with everything above. I’ll never want to see another Superman movie again. Who knows how I’ll feel? Maybe…maybe…gah this is crazy but stay with me…MAYBE I’LL LIKE IT AND MAYBE I WON’T BUT WHO CARES?!

Again, I’m not innocent here. For example: the other day I rewatched Superman Returns. I didn’t like it when I first saw it, and I don’t like it now, but 20 minutes in to my re-watch I tweeted that above statement. As I kept watching it, my opinion didn’t really change (it just doesn’t work and it’s totally uninteresting) but there were things I appreciated. It’s a nice romantic movie, rather than a summer blockbuster. See? I can be open to change!

Look…like whatever the f-ck you want. Dislike whatever the f-ck you want. Be a fanboy and be a fangirl. Let your freak flag fly. But just…discuss these things. Engage in a proper discussion so everyone gets a turn to talk, and maybe you will learn something about someone or something else, or…just maybe… you will remember what it was like to go into something without having been bombarded by 3000 retweets as to why something is or isn’t amazing.
